Whether you are throwing a baby shower for a friend with gestational diabetes, or are trying to get ideas to use at your own shower, you are already doing great by getting your research in. It is so important to make sure there are plenty of healthy options available, especially if the guest of honor has gestational diabetes. After all, it would be awkward and awfully unfair if the mommy to be wasn’t able to eat anything at her own party. Equally disappointing would be only being able to celery and carrots when there is a whole buffet of delicious treats.
Luckily, there are plenty of tasty options available for gestational diabetes friendly shower treats. Here are a few that you can try at your event:
Serve with whole wheat pita, baked tortilla chips, and dippable vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumber slices, bell peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower. Even better, dips are easily made at home so you don’t run the risk of listeria or other contaminates:
Bean Dip: Use a can of black beans, pinto beans, or double the recipe and use both. Drain the can of beans, reserving about two tablespoons of the liquid. Rinse and drain beans. Put into a food processor with a small can of drained green chilies, ¼ cup of onion, and low sodium taco seasoning to taste. Add in reserved liquid to reach desired consistency.
Hummus: Drain and rinse a can of garbanzo beans. Put in food processor with a clove of garlic, the juice of one lemon, and add small amounts of olive oil until you reach desired consistency. Add a little salt to taste.
Salsa: In a food processor, combine fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, onion, cilantro, and jalapenos if you like a little spice. For extra flavor, add in a few drops of Louisiana style hot sauce.
Quiche is an excellent option for baby shower fare, especially if you are able to make cute bite sized quiches as they are perfect finger foods and can be eaten hot or cold. Try spinach and cheese filling, a veggie lovers filling, and a meat filling such as ham and cheese. These are guaranteed to go over well with guests and mom to be.
Pigs in A Blanket
Make a version of these favorites using whole wheat dough instead of the typical pastry dough wrapped around little smokies. These are always a hit at every party. Even if you keep them with the pastry dough, there is enough to balance them out that your mommy to be may be able to pop a few without problem.
Unless your guest of honor has been specifically told by her doctor that she should not make any allowances, it is generally okay to indulge a little bit during a one-time special event such as a baby shower. This might mean that you can go for a regular cake. Otherwise, think of fruit for your sweet offerings rather than artificially sweetened snacks. You can even make a cake that is all fruit. Also think about small fruit pies with no added sugars.
Throwing a gestational diabetes baby shower is a lot easier than you might originally take. It just takes a little forethought and research for great recipes. You are on the right track already.
