Two decades ago, it was not really easy to know if you were carrying a twin pregnancy in the early stages because most technologies left it late. As such, there were cases were the mother would not know for sure until at least the 19th week. However, currently it is easy to tell by means of advanced ultrasound scans. Most would-be mothers would tell you that they usually ‘know’ that they are expecting a multiple pregnancy, but there is really no scientific way of being sure until ultrasound scans are conducted. However, there are instances during which your doctor will detect two heartbeats as opposed to one at some point, and that is when you know that you are carrying a twin pregnancy.
The fallacy of the size of the baby bump
A lot of people will think that you are pregnant with twins as early as the 4th month because of the size of your bump. However, no two pregnancies are the same, because there are women whose bumps grow rapidly and others whose never show until midway through it all. In some pregnancies, some women say that they can ‘feel’ their twins move long before the 9th week. This is mostly just a maternal feel (and you would be surprised at how many times it is right!), it is not a definitive concept, and you are going to hear from your doctor that it is impossible to detect movement at that early stage.
